Nucleus of Research in Engineering, Science and Sustainability of the Semi-Arid (NUPECS)

The Nucleus of Research in Engineering, Science and Sustainability of the Semi-Arid (NUPECS) is in operation in the rural area of  Caiçara Of Rio do Vento far 100 km from the capital Natal, in the state Rio Grande do Norte - Natal and is connected to Goal 1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere.
The  Nucleus of Research in Engineering, Science and Sustainability of the Semi-Arid (NUPECS) develop technical activities related to construction using waste materials such as: glass and plastic bottles. The methodology  brings housing, self-esteem, empowerment and income to rural and urban communities, also presenting a high environmental, social and economic impact reorganizing communities to be committed to Sustainable Development Goals (SGD).
In NUPECS has developed experiences of research that present impacts related to mitigate poverty. These experiences are developed by Julio Francisco Dantas de Rezende, as a researcher at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN).
The experiments help to combat poverty when much of the technologies developed provide the development of lower-cost housing, providing universal access to housing.
In NUPECS, the sustainable assets are unique in Brazil when is presented four different construction techniques: houses built with plastic bottles, glass bottles, tires and stones.
The progress of the green construction initiatives are very advanced receiving students from elementary medium and high school and also receveing researchers from different universities. In therms of methodology, the experiments developed permits scalability and application in different regions around the world.
It is considered the possibility to apply in diferent communities interested in sustainability and Sustainable Develoment Goals. If the initiative expand there is an operational methodology and technology to expand the actions of NUPECS to different countries.
International partnerships and the development of inter-organizational networks are fundamental to share the sustainable actions of green construction and SGD to new international communities. In the NUPECS site is just already possible receive technical visits to participate in rural area of the city Caiçara do Rio do Vento in Rio Grande do Norte State – Brazil. Our challenge is to build international ties to share and apply the green construction technologies worldwide.
